The other night I was coming home with my two kids and it was dark. I decided to drive to our mailbox before when drove into our garage. I got out and left the car on and used the other half of my keys to open my mailbox. Well, to my surprise the car had locked itself. I froze for a few seconds and tried to think what in the world was I going to do. In my panic I ran to the only neighbor that had their lights on. I rang the doorbell and waited and waited and nobody came at all. Once my mind became clear I soon realized that I had my house key with my mailbox key in my pocket. Duh, not sure why it took me sooo long to figure that one out. I said a silent little prayer and left the kids (I had no choice) and I ran into my home and called Will. Then I broke down on the phone with Will and he helped me to regain focus and he also said that there was no way he could leave the hospital (I suppose if I was dying then maybe the oral surgery dept would allow him to come home, maybe). Thankfully it was only 27 degrees outside and I left the heat going in the car. After four phone calls I finally found a locksmith that was open at 7:30pm and could come right over to get my kids out of the car. After I got off the phone I ran back down to the mailbox and at about 30 ft before I reached the car I could hear Rex screaming his head off. Ella was just sitting quietly and then she would fuss a little to join in the fun with Rex. I waited for about 20 minutes which felt like an eternity because I had no gloves or hat on so I just stood next to the window so Rex could see me and I was just praying that he would not vomit from all of his hysterical screaming. About 30 minutes into this whole ordeal the locksmith drove right up and $55.00 later, my kids were rescued! Rex was completely exhausted from crying that he collasped into his bed. I am so thankful that the heat was on, and that this locksmith happened to answer his phone when I needed him so very much.

What a nightmare! I really feel for you.
I can totally relate. I locked myself out with Anna inside shortly after we moved here. The neighbor and I ended up calling the police. We finally got in but Anna was a wreck!
I'm glad your heat was on too and that everything turned out okay in the end.
Yikes!!! Glad you found someone to help you. I bet the kids were very glad to get out of the car.
When I was babysitting one time, I got locked out of the house with the kids. Luckily it was summer, but it was pretty crazy. So glad things worked out.
been there, done that!! i had only three kids at the time (a few years ago) and my in-laws were out of town. i decided to take their car to do all of my errands. i was only supposed to use their car to take and pick them up from the airport. so......i thought i would just run a few places on their gas tank.....totally a bad choice!!! it was late in the evening and i was still running around. i stopped by the fire station to give aaron something and locked the keys in the car. we were WAY OUT in south gilbert, and it was past ten at night. you would think that one of the firemen could get my door open......NOPE!! even with a jimmy stick.....NOT EVEN THAT!! i called the only locksmith i could find who would answer his phone after midnight (we tried for over two hours with the jimmy stick!) so after paying him over $100, and told kris what i had done, (he didnt know i was out in HIS MOTHERS CAR) i vowed to never use someone elses car without permission. by the way, my mother-in-law was pretty mad till she heard what happened to me, then she thought that i got what i deserved. i had to wait to tell her till she got home from the trip, and man did i have an ulcer the whole time till they got home!!
AWFUL!!!!
Scarey :( I have anxieties about doing the same thing. And I think having your children locked in the car is good enough reason to let your husband come home. Good grief Charlie Brown!
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I locked myself and the kids out today in fact. Slammed the door from the house to the garage and then realized the knob was locked and I had NO keys. Of course, it is the coldest weather here this week, so we sat in the garage with no heat, no way to start the car, no nothing, except luckily the kids had their hats and coats and a couple of freezing cold blankets that were in the back of my van. I did the same thing and called Greg who of course was in the middle of a procedure and couldn't come to my rescue. Luckily, one of the ladies up front heard of my dilemma and offered to drive Greg's set of keys to our house. So my mishap didn't cost me, but boy were we frozen. We could see our breath and Ellie's hands were purple. That's what 35 minutes in the freezing cold can do to you with a high of only 20 degrees.
Scary- definitly one of my nightmares!
what a scarey experience! I am so glad it turned out ok.
BTW I like the new look!
Nanci! I just caught up on your blog. Christmas in AZ looked so fun! I hope your husband reappears soon! Happy Bday to Rex... and I am SO glad everything turned out okay with your lock out. Being a mom sometimes puts us in impossible situations. Hang in there!
I can't believe Will couldn't come home to get the kids out of the car! Wow, that is a really grueling schedule. It was so fun to read about Rex. Isaac is in pre-school 2 days a week and loves it. Sunbeams ... so far so good. He has a friend that acts up and Isaac likes to join in the fun.
You had to actually PAY to get your kids out of the car? That's insane! I thought if your kids were locked in the car it was free....guess not.
